Tibet at the Crossroads of Progress: Exploring Environmental Change, Cultural Identity, and Sustainable Development in Mêdog

Project Overview
Located in the eastern Himalayas, Motuo is a region with unique ecological systems and rich cultural traditions. Through this field study, we explored the impacts of the Yarlung Tsangpo hydropower project from both environmental and human perspectives, examining how large-scale development interacts with fragile ecosystems and local communities.
Rather than viewing sustainability as a purely technical challenge, this project aimed to understand how environmental decisions are shaped by ecological conditions, cultural values, and human experiences.


Environmental Monitoring and Ecological Assessment
To evaluate the potential ecological impacts of the hydropower project, we collaborated with researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and participated in field-based environmental monitoring.
Near the Yarlung Tsangpo River, researchers established hydrological monitoring stations to measure changes in river conditions, including flow velocity and discharge.
At a broader regional scale, multiple instruments, including spectrophotometers, radiometers, atmospheric particulate samplers, and raindrop spectrometers, were used to collect data on solar radiation, atmospheric moisture, precipitation characteristics, and air quality.
We also joined biodiversity surveys, documenting local plants and wildlife and collecting ecological samples to explore whether construction activities and increased human presence could influence local species diversity.
By comparing newly collected observations with historical environmental data, we were able to identify ecological changes associated with the project and evaluate potential strategies for environmental protection. The results showed that while the underground diversion design reduced direct surface disturbance compared with conventional dam structures, construction activities still disturbed underground rock formations and increased potential risks of geological instability. Meanwhile, changes in river flow patterns and reduced downstream discharge affected riparian habitats, vegetation, and local biodiversity, demonstrating the need for continuous ecological monitoring and adaptive restoration measures throughout the project’s operation.


Understanding the Human Dimension of Environmental Change
As part of our fieldwork, we interviewed local residents who had experienced relocation due to the hydropower project. These conversations revealed that relocation was not simply a change of physical location, but a transformation of people’s connection with land, community, and cultural identity.
For some residents, the project brought tangible improvements to daily life, including better housing conditions, transportation infrastructure, communication networks, and new economic opportunities through tourism and local industries. However, others found it difficult to adapt to leaving behind ancestral lands and traditional communities that had supported their families for generations.
One elderly resident shared how her family traditionally placed water from a sacred spring in front of their Buddhist altar as part of their religious practice. The spring was not only a source of water, but also a symbol of purity and spiritual connection.
Unfortunately, Changes in the water system affected not only the physical landscape, but also a place deeply connected to their beliefs and traditions.
These interviews demonstrated that environmental changes cannot always be fully captured through scientific measurements alone. For many indigenous and local communities, landscapes carry meanings beyond ecological or economic value—they represent history, identity, and spiritual belonging.
The project also highlighted the complexity of implementing environmental solutions. Even when scientific assessments provide an environmentally optimal strategy, real-world decisions must consider broader factors, including community livelihoods, cultural traditions, and social transformation. Understanding these human dimensions is essential for developing solutions that are not only technically effective, but also socially sustainable.



Reflections on Sustainable Development
This field study reshaped my understanding of sustainability. Scientific data and engineering solutions are essential, but they alone cannot capture the full complexity of environmental decisions.
Sustainable development requires us to look beyond measurable outcomes and consider what is harder to quantify: ecological integrity, development needs, cultural continuity, and the experiences of local communities. The challenge is not simply to identify the most technically efficient solution, but to understand whose values are being considered, what trade-offs are being made, and what may be lost along the way.
In my future projects, I hope to approach environmental issues through this broader lens, combining scientific analysis with attention to the communities and cultures affected by environmental change.
